Gem collector favours morganite

A Hong Kong-based crystal collector is charmed with the beauty of morganite.

Juliana Chen, a retired senior civil servant, said morganite is favoured for its durability, colour and lustre.

“Pink is a fashion favourite especially among young jetsetters in the mainland. With the asking price of quality pink diamonds spiralling to millions of dollars per carat, morganite emerges as a gem that is in strong demand,” she said.

Chen recalled seeing a 30-carat morganite brooch, which cost less than HK$10,000 ($1,290) several years ago, which she did not buy. The same piece, she said, would cost more than HK$2,000 ($258) per carat today.

While clarity also enhances the stone’s beauty and value, some collectors may prefer specimens with silky manganese inclusions for their “ethereal healing properties,” she said.
